Hot-air airship: another view of Chenonceau
A rare aerial experience
Chenonceau from the Sky: The Unique Experience of a Hot-Air Airship
High above the Cher River, discover the castle and its surrounding landscapes from an aircraft that is both carried by warm air and steered by its pilot.
There are several ways to explore the landscapes of the Loire Valley from the sky. The hot-air airship offers a unique experience: a flight in a small group, aboard an open gondola, with a route that the pilot can adjust when conditions permit.
Key Points
- The flight takes about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on weather conditions and air traffic.
- Up to three passengers in the gondola.
- Meeting in Chenonceaux, confirmed by the team before the flight.
- Flights are available from April through October, subject to operational conditions.
An airship that is different from a hot-air balloon
Both aircraft use hot air to rise, but they operate differently in flight. A hot-air balloon follows the movement of air masses. A hot-air airship, on the other hand, has a propeller and a rudder: the pilot can steer its course, within the limits imposed by weather, regulations, and safety conditions.
This possibility is what gives the flight its unique character. It allows the pilot to plan the route and the viewpoints, without promising a specific itinerary: each flight depends on the conditions of the day.
Chenonceau and the Cher Valley as seen from the gondola
From the air, Chenonceau Castle can be seen set against its surroundings: the gallery spanning the Cher River, the wooded banks, the gardens, and the countryside around Tours. The open-top gondola offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding area.
The flight accommodates a maximum of three passengers. This small-group format is ideal for those who wish to share an intimate flying experience—as a couple, with family, or with friends. The estimated flight time is approximately 20 to 25 minutes; the meeting time and itinerary will be confirmed by the team before departure.
How does the experiment work?
Upon your arrival, the team will welcome you and explain the flight procedure. You can watch as the aircraft is prepared and inflated before boarding. The pilot will then go over the safety instructions and provide useful information to help you enjoy the flight.
After takeoff, the airship gradually gains altitude. At the end of the flight, it lands gently. The full experience involves more than just the time spent in the air; be sure to follow the practical instructions provided by Air Touraine before your visit.
Whether it’s a special occasion, a trip to Touraine, or simply the desire to experience a unique aircraft, the hot-air airship adds a whole new dimension to the aerial tour of Chenonceau.
