Chenonceau from the sky: helicopter or hot-air balloon?

With its bridge spanning the Cher River and its landscaped gardens along the water’s edge, the Château de Chenonceau offers a unique sight. From the sky, discover two ways to admire it from a different perspective: a helicopter ride and a hot-air balloon ride.

From the estate’s paths, you can admire the facades and gardens. As you gain elevation, a different perspective emerges: the château appears to be perched on the Cher River, while its arches connect the two banks. Depending on the experience you choose, you can explore this landscape on a helicopter flight departing from Tours or during a peaceful hot-air balloon ride.

Two experiences, two ways to fly: the helicopter follows a set route over the castles of Touraine; in a hot-air balloon, the path is determined by the wind.

Chenonceau by Helicopter: The Castle and the Landscapes of Touraine

The Air Touraine helicopter flight from Tours to Chenonceau lasts about 30 minutes. Departing from Tours Val de Loire Airport, the tour heads toward the Cher River and the château, then takes you past other landmarks in Touraine depending on the planned itinerary: the landscapes of Tours and Amboise, the vineyards, and several estates in the valley.

The aerial view clearly shows the castle's architecture: its gallery spanning the river, its gardens, and the estate's place in the landscape. The headphones allow you to hear the pilot's commentary during the flight.

Chenonceau by Hot Air Balloon: An Exploration at the Pace of the Wind

A hot-air balloon ride offers a unique experience. The flight lasts about an hour and is part of a roughly three-hour experience that includes preparing the balloon, the pre-flight briefing, the flight itself, and the return to the meeting point. Up in the air, you can take in the scenery in peace, either at sunrise or sunset.

Unlike a helicopter, a hot-air balloon cannot choose its own direction; it moves with the wind. The pilot selects the takeoff site based on weather conditions to maximize the chances of flying over Chenonceau, Amboise, or other landscapes in the Loire Valley. Therefore, flying over a specific location cannot be guaranteed.

Preparing for Your Flight

Flights are subject to weather conditions and operational constraints.
